Pak n' Save Oxford Pies Sausage Roll

Glen brought this roll to work this morning. Unfortunately we had to nuke it so the pastry went a bit soft. It's packaged in the Oxford Pies plastic bag.

3 - Flavour is not amazing and not terrible - what I'd call typical old-school sausage roll filling and pastry.
4 - Meat-to-pastry ratio - classic pastry. Shame I had to nuke it.
2 - Real food value - can't detect any vegetable matter or any real meat so harsh score here.
3 - Presentation - never a big fan of the plastic wrap sausage rolls but I guess they have to package these mass-produced rolls. Is there a connection between plastic wrap and average sausage rolls? Only time will tell as we sample more.
5 - Cost - redeeming feature for this one as it only costs $2.69. Mass-production has it's benefits I suppose.
3 - Overall satisfaction - 'can still feel it sitting in me guts' is an expression that comes to mind. Average.

A new King - will it retain its title??

Gear Meat Pies - Beef Bacon and Cheese Sausage Roll

First up on the renewed Sausage Roll Project is the BBC from Gear Meat Pies - You start with the King but can it remain on top?

5 - Flavour - Delicious flaky pastry and great filling.
4.5 - A lot of Meat just enough pastry
4 - Real food value - there is evidence of cheese and the flavour of bacon and it appears to be real beef
4 - Great presentation - how could you not want to sample that bugger?
5 - Cost - $4 was good value.
5 - Overall satisfaction - Worth the money

The Hub Mk IV

The staff at The Hub weren't happy about the quality of the sausage rolls, I wasn't happy with the sausage rolls, I guess no-one was buying the sausage rolls because today they have replaced the Evil Dry Tasteless Bastard with  a delicious homemade version that brings them back into the game as one of the best sausage rolls around. Michelle has done a great service to Sausage Roll World by cooking up a beauty.

Nice

Nom nom nom...

4 - Flavour - Delicious flaky pastry and great filling.
4 - Good Meat-to-pastry ratio.
4 - Real food value - there is evidence of onion and it appears to be real meat.
5 - Great presentation - how could you not want to sample that bugger?
4 - Cost - $2 was good value. I guess I just have to get used to the fact that I'm never going to see a $1.50 roll again.
4 - Overall satisfaction - Mk IV is a winner. So glad.

Smosh - you're still here - can you go try one of these and get back to me with your opinion.

Smosh is Moving

My co-editor Smosh is moving to Australia - like every other bloody Kiwi at the moment. Good luck mate! So we won't have any peer reviewed sausage rolls on here for the time being.

However, I'm encouraging him to contribute his thoughts on the quality of the Sausage Roll in Oz. While thinking about this I thought why not open up the blog to other sausage roll connoisseurs who may want to contribute from other locations.

Our initial brief was to find the best sausage roll in our town of Gisborne, New Zealand. As we started sampling wares as far away as Wairoa and Napier, I think the logical progression is to find the best sausage roll on the planet.

Feel free to drop us a line and become a contributing editor.

The Saga of the Sausage Roll at the Hub

Our local cafe - The Hub - has just changed it's catering contract and new food has arrived including a new sausage roll. Readers of this blog will note that the old sausage roll available here was superb - highly rated. However the new one has lost the plot.

The Hub Saussie Roll Mk III

A dry and nasty piece of work
2 - Flavour - pretty tasteless.
4 - Meat-to-pastry ratio - good balance but I question whether it was actually meat.
1 - Real food value - see above.
4 - Presentation - it looked the part.
3 - Cost - $1.50 was OK for the portion size but ultimately overpriced.
1 - Overall satisfaction - Version three of the hub sausage roll left me very disappointed.

Crazy...

This one is off the scale. Just purchased what I thought was a standard saussie roll from the caff at EIT Taradale and it turns out to be a...

CHICKEN SAUSAGE ROLL:

Who are these people who think they can mess with our heads? Chicken?

I ate it.

Flavour - it tasted like chicken
Meat-to-pastry ratio - is chicken a real meat?
Real food value - it's chicken!
Presentation - chicken in a sausage roll?
Cost - can't recall - my memory has been erased by the shock
Overall satisfaction - I'm freaked out

Cafe 287 Wairoa

Cafe 287 just out of Wairoa is a nice place to stop on the way to Napier. The coffee is good and the sausage roll, made on the premises, is delicious. The only downer is that the microwaving leaves the crust a bit limp. But the filling more than makes up for this minor minus. The cost of $2.50 is reasonable considering the quality. Highly recommended.

Hey Smosh - you should try this one on the way back from wherever you are.

Flavour - 5
Meat-to-pastry ratio - 5
Real food value - 5
Presentation - 5
